Music of China refers to the music of the Chinese people, which may be the music of the Han Chinese as well as other ethnic minorities within mainland China.[1]
It also includes music produced by people of Chinese origin in some territories outside mainland China using traditional Chinese instruments or in the Chinese language. It covers a highly diverse range of music from the traditional to the modern.[1]

On September 2009, J. Kenneth Moore of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, wrote an article titled "Music and Art of China" in which he pointed out that China provides some of the earliest traces of music making. These are mainly in the form of well-preserved musical instruments, the tangible evidence of music." [2]

This expert continues: " Over several millennia, musical instruments from regional indigenous traditions as well as from India and Central and West Asia were assimilated into the mainstream of Chinese music." [2]
He adds that some of the most ancient instruments have been retained, transformed, or revived throughout the ages, and many are in common use even today, testifying to a living legacy of a durable art. [2]
Traditional Chinese music can be traced back 7,000 - 8,000 years based on the discovery of a bone flute made in the Neolithic Age.[3]
In the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, only royal families and dignitary officials enjoyed music, which was made on chimes and bells. [3]
During the Tang Dynasty, dancing and singing entered the mainstream, spreading from the royal court to the common people. [3]

With the introduction of foreign religions such as Buddhism and Islam, exotic and religious melodies were absorbed into Chinese music and were enjoyed by the Chinese people at fairs organized by religious temples.[3]
Liu Fang, who is an internationally acclaimed virtuoso for pipa and guzheng, writes: " Generally speaking, there are two kinds of music traditions – classical and folk. Music from the “classical tradition” refers to art music or “sophisticated” music composed by scholars and literati in China’s historical past." [4]
As a child prodigy in her native China, now a resident of Canada, Liu Fang has been regarded as one of the most eminent pipa soloists.[5]
She is also excellent performer on the Chinese zither Guzheng. Her fans are young and old, of all nationalities and backgrounds. Her talent crosses all boundaries, linguistic and cultural. [5]
Chinese music is influenced by many factors from the Cultural Revolution to current day music genres. [6]
The older generation of Chinese people from the Mao era still listen to old traditional songs like like opera, instrumental music, classical music and piano music paired with ballads.[6]
Also songs from the 1980's when Chinese rock was first introduced to China is still trending today in addition to current pop and rock from this era.[6]
Also some of the older generation Chinese are still in the rock phase that swept through the country after the Cultural Revolution a few decades ago.[6]
